The Digital Industry
The digital industry is expanding at an increasingly rapid rate with increasingly large amount of capital being invested into all areas of the digital industry, this includes well known areas such as web development and user experience roles in which there has been an increasing need by employers.
The digital industry is one of the fastest growing and changing industries in the uk today, not only is there an increasing need for web based job roles but also new areas are emerging with the inclusion of other areas of academia for example science and maths which have very prominent roots in the digital sector.
As I am currently studying a web development degree, it is vital that I gain as much of an insight as possible into my potential future career sector to allow me to evaluate and assess which area of the industry would best suit my strengths and weaknesses. I aim to personally research into job opportunities in my desired field and which area I aim to apply for taking into account areas of geographical interest, salaries and growth.
To gain more information into the digital sector I researched two main articles, The Tech nation 2016 report and The Manchester digital skills summit report. By observing these reports I hope to gain an insight into the digital industry and what aspects have accelerated its growth so rapidly and how employers have responded to this and what advantages and disadvantages have also arisen.
There has been an abrupt but constant rise in the amount of jobs available in the digital sector with many of them spreading into various areas of the economy, “digital jobs and activity are becoming ever more important in traditionally non-digital areas of the economy from retail to financial services and the public sector”.
Society as a whole is constantly changing and evolving to adapt to new influences concerning the way we live, the introduction of digital systems such as computers and most vitally the worldwide web has changed the dynamic of the way we live and more specifically the way we work. The addition of digital technologies in the workplace with automated systems becoming more and more common over recent years with many employers taking advantage of this in order to cut costs and increase productivity, this is a massive factor in areas such as retail and construction in which many manual jobs will be lost as a direct result. This addition of new technologies has caused many jobs to become redundant but in effect has opened up a range of new job opportunities in the digital sector.
According to the tech nation report 2016, employment in the digital sector has grown at an extremely rapid rate 32% faster than any other area in the UK’s economy during 2010-2014 with salary averages up to and exceeding £50,000 a year, this is higher than a third of the national wage average in the UK.
This is good news for many digital based degree graduates including myself, with the top digital sectors such as app and software development, data management and hardware development commanding the higher end of the potential salaries scale. This is due to ever increasing demand by businesses to encourage potential employees to learn the skills necessary to achieve these higher wage averages and to satisfy the need for skilled workers in the digital tech sector.
Not only did this area interest me but it also allowed me to identify the huge need for design in any digital based form, from websites to apps and especially in online gaming. Many roles concerning the design are highly sought after with positions such as user experience designers and software & application developers which hold the most specialised area at 16.7% of the tech business.
From studying web development I have been exposed to many new and exciting areas within development itself including not only front end and backend development but design, planning and developing not only the need for technological skills but also communication skills. This allows me to develop a set of well-rounded skills encompassing multiple areas of the digital sector in which potential employers can identify.
The tech industry has massive potential for the future, with technology becoming more and more prominent there will be an increasingly large amount of employment opportunities for years to come. I believe the skills I have acquired during my web development degree will become essential in the not so far future.
